Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday announced plans to white-top 500 kilometres of Bengaluru roads, with an estimated cost of Rs 4,000 crore, in bid to improve the city’s road infrastructure.

Shivakumar, who also holds the portfolio for Bengaluru Development, said a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared for the large-scale project. He made the remarks while addressing a gathering in the Gandhinagar constituency, the Indian Express reported.

The deputy CM explained that white-topping, a method of laying concrete over existing roads, can extend their lifespan by 25 to 30 years. “Already, white-topping works are being carried out along 148 km. For the development of 83 roads, Rs 1,800 crore is being spent," he added.

In addition to the white-topping initiative, black-topping works are also underway on 182 roads covering approximately 350 km, with a budget of Rs 695 crore. Recently, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sanctioned Rs 1,100 crore to asphalt 550 km of roads in the city, Shivakumar added.

Addressing the issue of potholes, Shivakumar revealed that around 10,000 potholes have been filled so far. He recalled that during the previous tenure of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, the government had submitted an affidavit to the high court reporting 20,000 potholes in the city, with the court monitoring repair progress.

Speaking at the same event, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah directed officials to fill all potholes in Bengaluru within a week. This directive follows his earlier order last month setting an October 31 deadline for pothole repairs across the city’s five corporation limits.

“Because of the rains, there have been delays in filling potholes; that’s the issue. There have been more rains this year," Siddaramaiah said.

The Chief Minister also stressed that white-topping work underway in various parts of the city would help reduce the pothole problem as these roads last much longer. “We will fill the potholes and also do white topping of roads in the city," he added.

Siddaramaiah further mentioned that funds are being provided to all MLAs for development work in their constituencies, with Rs 8,000 crore allocated in the budget for this purpose. “The funds are being given to both urban and rural MLAs, also opposition MLAs, because we want all-round development," he said.
