Two sub-inspectors in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr were suspended after a 28-year-old woman, who had earlier accused four men of gang-rape, alleged that the officers raped her over two days and extorted ₹50,000 from her under the pretext of taking action against her assaulters. The allegations were submitted through the state’s Integrated Grievance Redressal System (IGRS) portal last week, prompting senior officials to order a departmental inquiry.
Bulandshahr SSP Dinesh Kumar told the Times Of India that both officers were removed from active duty after the survivor’s complaint raised “serious" concerns about their conduct.
“The woman initially filed a gang-rape complaint, and one accused was arrested. The fresh allegations against the two officers are serious, and they were suspended immediately," he said. However, the officer said that the survivor has since altered her statements multiple times and is currently unwilling to file a formal complaint naming the officers.
In her detailed account, the woman said she was kidnapped in November last year by four men, drugged and held captive for 48 days at different locations across Aligarh and nearby areas. During her captivity, she alleged she was raped repeatedly and forcibly converted. She claimed that one of the men first contacted her on Instagram before introducing her to the others involved.
After escaping and approaching police, she said, one of the suspended sub-inspectors summoned her to a private residence and raped her several times over two days. She further alleged that another officer demanded ₹50,000, saying the money was required to secure the arrest of the gang-rape accused. According to her complaint, her husband was detained and threatened with a fabricated case to coerce her into complying with the officers’ demands.
SSP Dinesh Kumar said investigators examined the original gang-rape allegations and found evidence corroborating the involvement of only one of the four men she named- the person who had first contacted her on Instagram.
“We checked the call detail records and locations of the other three and found no evidence placing them at the locations mentioned," he said.
The inquiry into the conduct of the suspended officers is ongoing.
