Porvorim: As MLAs debated the motion of thanks to the governor’s address, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral made a strong pitch for his constituency to be declared the headquarters of the newly notified Kushavati district, citing its strategic central location.Cabral argued that Curchorem’s position as a central town in Kushavati made it the ideal choice for the district headquarters. He also proposed that govt consider introducing a ferry service connecting Khamamol in Curchorem to Panaji, stating that such a facility would not only reduce travel time for commuters but also mark a significant step towards developing waterways in the state. However, the debate saw sharp criticism of the governor’s address from opposition benches.
Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira took the lead in pointing out what he termed as critical omissions in the governor’s speech.Ferreira said that the governor failed to address the 10-point charter of demands outlined by former HC judge Justice Ferdino Rebello, which he said contained important recommendations for the state’s governance. The Aldona MLA also expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Goa, noting that the governor’s address was silent on concrete steps to address this pressing issue.
Issues like illegal sand mining, conversion of salt pans, and corruption in govt offices were not addressed, Ferreira said, adding that these matters required urgent attention from govt. “The manner in which the Mhadei matter is being handled is very sad. The governor has not been able to address the issue effectively,” Ferreira said.Several other MLAs also participated in the discussion on the motion of thanks.
