US President Donald Trump on Wednesday hit back at Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying Canada “lives because of the United States.”His comments came a day after Carney, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland's Davos, criticised American “hegemony.”Trump, also speaking at the WEF in Davos, said Carney “wasn't so grateful” despite the US providing “many freebies.”“Canada gets many freebies from the US and should be grateful. His (Carney's) speech showed he wasn't so grateful. Canada lives because of the United States, remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements,” he remarked.A day earlier, Carney addressed the WEF, with the summit taking place against the backdrop of Trump’s threats to take control of Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory in the Arctic Ocean, citing national security concerns.
Washington’s European allies have rallied behind Greenland and Denmark. In response, Trump announced 10% tariffs on eight European countries supporting Greenland and Denmark, including Denmark itself.
The tariffs will take effect on February 1 and rise to 25% starting June 1.The US leader, who began his second and final White House term in January last year, has also spoken about annexing America’s northern neighbour and making it the “51st state” of the United States.
