Carey Price, one of the greatest goalies in Montreal Canadiens history, had his contract moved on Friday, September 6, 2025. The Canadiens traded his $10.5 million contract and a 2026 fifth-round draft pick to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for young defenseman Gannon Laroque.
Price has not played since 2022 because of a serious knee injury and is on long-term injured reserve. Even though he is unlikely to play again, his contract helps the Sharks reach the NHL salary floor this season.
Carey Price contract move ends long Montreal chapter
The deal was made in Montreal on Friday, where the Canadiens cleared space on their payroll after paying Price a $5.5 million signing bonus on September 1. The Sharks will now cover $2 million left on his deal for the rest of the season.
This trade leaves Montreal with just over $4.56 million in salary cap space.Carey Price, now 38, spent his full 15-year NHL career in Montreal after being drafted fifth overall in 2005. He won nearly every major goaltending award in 2014-15, including the Hart Trophy, Vezina Trophy, Ted Lindsay Award, and William M. Jennings Trophy. That year, he had 44 wins, a .933 save percentage, and a 1.96 goals-against average.
Over his career, Carey Price played 712 regular-season games, winning 361 of them with a .917 save percentage. In the playoffs, he made 92 appearances and posted 43 wins. Montreal fans saw him as the heart of the team for years, but injuries ended his playing career early.Carey Price signed an eight-year, $84 million contract on July 2, 2017, which was one of the biggest in Canadiens history. Now, the final year of that deal belongs to San Jose.
Gannon Laroque joins Montreal Canadiens in exchange of Carey Price
In return, the Canadiens received 22-year-old defenseman Gannon Laroque. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Laroque was a fourth-round pick by San Jose in the 2021 NHL Draft. In the minor leagues, his salary is $80,000. The young defenseman now gets a new chance with Montreal as the Canadiens continue to rebuild.The trade marks the end of Carey Price’s long connection to Montreal and gives Gannon Laroque an opportunity with one of hockey’s most historic teams.
