Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday hit back at US President Donald Trump’s “dead economy" remark, saying that India is currently the “fastest-growing major economy and nobody can compete with it."
He asserted that time would determine which nation faced economic decline, and went on to describe the tariffs imposed on India as a temporary measure.
Speaking at the Har Ghar Tiranga programme at Thummalapalli Kalakshetram in Vijayawada, Naidu said the global economy depended on India’s services.
“Ours is a good economy. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 11-year rule, the country’s economy moved from 11th to 4th place. It will reach 3rd place by 2028. By the time we celebrate the 100th Independence anniversary in 2047, our country will stand strong in the world," he said.
“Though initially India was treated as a poor country incapable of anything at one time, today it is emerging as the most powerful nation," he added.
Naidu’s comments came against the backdrop of rising trade frictions with the United States. Just last week, President Trump raised tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, criticising India for continuing to import crude oil from Russia despite US sanctions.
Earlier, Trump had described India as a “dead economy," expressing frustration over New Delhi’s refusal to stop oil purchases from Moscow.
“I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together," the President had said.

The Chief Minister praised the Prime Minister’s leadership, stressing that India would not compromise on integrity.
“India is emerging as a global leader (Vishwaguru). We gave a strong response to terrorism with Operation Sindoor. Our soldiers fought tirelessly against terrorism," he said.
Explaining the purpose of Har Ghar Tiranga, Naidu said it aimed to foster unity beyond caste, religion, region, or language. He noted that the national flag represented patriotism and pride, not merely an act of hoisting it.
“It is a matter of pride for all of us that our Telugu compatriot Pingali Venkaiah designed the most powerful national flag in the world. The flag is not just a piece of cloth; it is the honour of our country. When we see it, we feel excited and patriotic," he said.
Naidu also paid tribute to freedom fighters from Telugu-speaking regions, including Alluri Seetharama Raju, Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu, Gottipati Brahmayya, Sardar Gowthu Lachanna, and Duggirala Gopala Krishnayya.
“Many great people were born on Telugu soil. They ignited national spirit among us with their fighting spirit," he added.
