Hindu Youth Dies While Fleeing Mob After Jumping Into Canal in Bangladesh
A 25-year-old Hindu man died in Bangladesh after jumping into a canal while trying to escape a mob that was chasing him on suspicion of theft. The incident took place in Mahadebpur area of Naogaon district.
The victim has been identified as Mithun Sarkar, a resident of Bhandarpur village. Police recovered his body from the canal on Tuesday afternoon, according to Bangladeshi media reports.
What we know about the incident?
According to local reports, Mithun Sarkar was chased by a group of locals who suspected him of theft. While trying to flee, he jumped into a canal and drowned. Police later reached the spot and recovered the body.
No official confirmation has been given yet on whether Mithun was involved in any theft.

Series of attacks on minorities
Mithun’s death is the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting religious minorities in Bangladesh over the past few days.
On Monday, a Hindu businessman, who was also acting editor of a newspaper, was shot dead in the head by unidentified attackers in Jessore district. On the same day, a 40-year-old Hindu grocery shop owner was killed with a sharp weapon in Narsingdi city.
Earlier this month, on January 3, Khokon Chandra Das, aged 50, died after being attacked and set on fire near Keurbhanga Bazar in Shariatpur district.
December also saw several brutal incidents. On December 24, Amrit Mondal was lynched in Rajbari town over alleged extortion. On December 18, Dipu Chandra Das, aged 25, was lynched by a mob and his body was set on fire in Mymensingh over alleged blasphemy.
These incidents come as Bangladesh prepares for its first parliamentary elections since the 2024 uprising that toppled the Sheikh Hasina government. Voting is scheduled for February 12.
