Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said that China has expressed willingness to ease tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and resolve border disputes through dialogue.

In an exclusive conversation with Network18 Group Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi, Rajnath Singh confirmed that de-escalation has already taken place at several friction points along the LAC. “There has been de-escalation at several points. You must have seen China’s statement where they said they want to normalise the situation with India at the LAC," he said.

Singh revealed that he held “very good discussions" with his Chinese counterpart, Dong Jun, on the sidelines of the 12th ADMM-Plus meeting in Kuala Lumpur, during which China said it wants to continue military-to-military talks to prevent any flare-ups along the LAC in the future.

The bilateral ties between the two countries nosedived after the violent military clashes in eastern Ladakh, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed. After five years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit at Kazan on 23 October 2024. The two leaders had agreed that the Special Representatives on the India-China boundary question will meet at an early date to oversee the management of peace and tranquility in border areas and to explore a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question.

When asked whether India could trust Beijing after the recent statements, the Defence Minister replied, “They have said it, and we (India) have also agreed on this. When I went to the SCO meeting in Shanghai, I held a meeting with the Chinese Defence Minister. I said clearly that the ice on India-China ties should melt down, or not — and how long will the ice be there? There should be a clear decision on this."

Singh also said the Chinese Defence Minister, in a recent meeting with him, said they are ready for discussions and want to find a way to resolve differences of opinion on the LAC.
