 History-sheeter among 2 arrested for attempted murder

COIMBATORE: Ramanathapuram police in Coimbatore city arrested two men in the early hours of Monday for allegedly attempting to murder two others due to previous enmity. One of the arrested, a history-sheeter, tried to evade arrest, fell from his bike, and sustained a fracture in his hand.The arrested have been identified as Praveen Kumar alias “Mass” Praveen Kumar, 30, and Shanmugam, 31, both residents of Ramanathapuram. They were apprehended in the wee hours of Monday in connection with an attempted murder case.According to police, the accused and the injured, Barani Raja, 28, and Kousik, 27, all belong to Ramanathapuram. They were earlier involved in a drunken brawl near Lakshmi Mills, after which Praveen allegedly developed enmity against them.

On Sunday, Barani Raja and Kousik went to a bakery near Ramanathapuram to buy a cake for a friend’s birthday celebration. Police said Praveen, accompanied by Shanmugam, saw them there, picked a quarrel, and attacked them with a knife before fleeing.Barani Raja and Kousik sustained bleeding injuries to their hands and head. Public alerted the police and called an ambulance. The injured were admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Ramanathapuram police registered a case under Sections 296(b), 109(1), 118(1), and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and launched a manhunt. Late Sunday night, police spotted the suspects on a motorcycle near Ramanathapuram. When officers attempted to detain them, they allegedly tried to escape, fell from the bike, and one sustained a fracture injury.Both were arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
