The students of degree colleges in Hassan, on Tuesday, staged a protest, under the banner of the All India Democratic Students’ Organization (AIDSO), condemning the delay in appointing guest faculty.

The students gathered in front of the Hemavathi statue in the city and raised slogans against the State government. They said that there had been no classes, as there were no teachers.

Chaitra, district convener of AIDSO, said that the guest faculty were relieved from duty about a month ago. “All government degree colleges in the State are depending on guest faculty for the classes. There are no teachers to take classes in certain subjects. For the last month, there have been regular classes. This has jeopardised the academic environment,” she said.

Even as the first internal tests were scheduled for next month, there had been no classes on many subjects. She said the State government should take a clear stand on the qualification of guest lecturers and ensure they are appointed at the earliest.

The protesters submitted a memorandum, addressed to the Minister of Higher Education, to the Deputy Commissioner. Co-convener of AIDSO, Sushma, committee members Yashmeen, Thilak, Mohan, Abhishek and others led the protest.
