Cooch Behar SP Accused Of Assaulting Neighbours For Bursting Crackers On Kali Puja Night

The local residents claimed that the SP, along with a few policemen, allegedly assaulted women and minors for bursting firecrackers.

A case has been registered against Cooch Behar District Superintendent of Police (SP) Dyutiman Bhattacharjee for allegedly beating and thrashing his neighbours. As per the local media reports, Bhattacharjee is accused of beating women and children for allegedly bursting firecrackers in front of their house near the SP bungalow. The incident triggered an outrage in the area.

Media reports cited the local residents as stating that the SP, along with a few policemen, allegedly assaulted women and minors. They claimed that five minors have sustained injuries, while two others were severely hurt.

The residents also said that none of the policemen were in uniform. This incident has sparked protests in the Rail Ghumti area under Ward 9 of Cooch Behar.

Advocate Mallika Karji, who also got injured in the alleged attack, lodged a complaint and also informed the Bar Council of India about the matter.

In a press conference, Karji said, “The SP came out wearing half-pants, a sleeveless vest, and a headband. He started hitting children, a woman, and even a schoolteacher without any warning."

“We were simply celebrating Diwali. The SP came out and started hitting everyone. I am a woman and I was just watching. He came and started beating us with sticks. He didn’t even tell us anything. We would have left the place if there was any warning from the police," she added.

As per the reports, the SP has denied the allegations. A probe is underway.
