Cricket Legend Offers Australia's Help To Make India 'Better At Olympic Sports'

Mark Waugh has offered India Australia’s 'help' to get 'better' at Olympic sports other than cricket.

Former Australian men’s cricket captain Mark Waugh has offered his country’s help to make India ‘better’ at other Olympic sports. Waugh said while India doesn’t need a hand in cricket anymore, Australia can contribute the ‘best technology’ in sports across science, medicine and clothing, among others, to help the Asian nation.

Australia is the 14th country in the all-time rank for Olympic medals with 636 (185 gold, 204 silver and 247 bronze). India are nowhere close with only 58 medals overall (13 gold, 25 silver, and 20 bronze). The situation is not too different in cricket because of Australia’s historic dominance, India have caught up well in the last two decades.

“They don’t need any help in cricket," Waugh said, as quoted by PTI. “They do it very well in India. But they have the sports where Australia can definitely help. We have got the best of technology. The best sports science. The best sports medicine. Sports clothing. A couple of power brands in Australia, in that sporting area. So we have got the technology and expertise in Australia. That will definitely help India become better at sports," he added.

Now, cricket has returned to the Olympics, too, starting with LA 2028.

Waugh on what India can learn from Australia

Waugh also spoke about the difference in the sport-education balance between India and Australia, saying that the Aussies can teach how to prioritise sport to the Indian counterparts, too.

“Sport was everything to me. I went to school basically to play sport. It was sport 24×7. And then education. I fitted that in alongside sport. India is the other way around. Education is number one. And then you want to play a bit of sport. But just recently I have seen a change. There is a lot more focus on sport in schools and education institutions. Australia is really great at that. I know that India are very keen to have a positive influence on the world stage, not just in cricket but at the Olympics. I think Australia can really help you."
