The lawyer for the wife of the senior finance ministry official killed in the BMW crash has alleged that the accused, Gaganpreet Makkar, delayed urgent medical help, filed a false injury report, and even got herself admitted to the ICU to mislead the investigation.
The crash took place on Sunday near the Delhi Cantonment metro station, when Navjot Singh (52), a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, was returning home from Bangla Sahib Gurdwara with his wife Sandeep Kaur on a motorcycle. The couple was hit by a BMW driven by Makkar. While Singh died on the spot, his wife was seriously injured.
The counsel for Sandeep Kaur, advocate Atul Kumar, told the court that Gaganpreet was not seriously injured, but instead of rushing Singh to the nearest hospital, she chose to drive him nearly 20km away to GTB Hospital, The Times of India reported.
“Every minute counts in such cases," he said, claiming that even the van driver had urged Gaganpreet to go to a nearby hospital. “Why didn’t you call an ambulance? The base hospital was minutes away," he added.
Kumar further accused Gaganpreet of tampering with evidence. He claimed she got herself admitted to an ICU and filed a false medico-legal case (MLC) report five hours after the crash. “She was driving at such a speed that the BMW turned turtle," the lawyer told the court.
