The arrest of a DMK youth wing functionary in a gun-running case has triggered a sharp political attack, with BJP leader K Annamalai accusing the ruling DMK of turning Tamil Nadu into a “safe haven for criminals.”

Annamalai made the remarks in a post on X after police arrested Rathina Balan, identified as a DMK Youth Wing functionary, and his alleged accomplice Aamer Suhail for attempting to sell firearms through social media platforms.

“Tamil Nadu has been gripped by an alarming surge of violence over the past five years, coinciding with the DMK’s return to power in the State,” Annamalai wrote.

He alleged that the latest arrest exposed a deeper breakdown in law and order. “Now, the DMK appears determined to push this culture of lawlessness to an even more dangerous level,” he said, calling the gun-running case “a chilling reminder of how deep the rot has set in.”

“From rowdy elements, ganja peddlers and international drug traffickers to illegal gun runners, the DMK has increasingly turned into a safe haven for every unlawful element plaguing our society,” he said.

The BJP leader has repeatedly accused the DMK government of failing to control crime since coming to power, a charge the ruling party has denied in the past.
