Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has urged the Union government to take cognisance of what she described as rising violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh. Her appeal followed the brutal killing of a Hindu youth, Deepu Chandra Das, in the neighbouring country. Vadra said incidents of violence against Hindu, Christian and Buddhist minorities were a matter of serious concern and required firm diplomatic engagement with Dhaka.
In a post on X, she termed the murder “extremely alarming" and said that discrimination and violence based on religion, caste or identity were crimes against humanity. She called on the Government of India to raise the issue of minority safety strongly with the Bangladesh government.
Details of the killing
Deepu Chandra Das, a young garment factory worker from Bhaluka in Mymensingh district, was reportedly killed by a mob on Thursday night. According to local police, the incident took place at around 9 pm. Das was accused by the crowd of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet, an allegation that led to a violent attack.
Police said Das was tied up, beaten to death and later set on fire. Several members of the mob were reportedly known to him. Videos of the incident were recorded on mobile phones by people present at the scene, adding to the shock surrounding the killing.
A duty officer at Bhaluka Police Station told an international news channel that the mob acted in anger and took the law into its own hands. The police said an investigation was launched soon after the incident.
Arrests made in the case
Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested seven people in connection with the lynching. The arrests were made following operations at multiple locations in Mymensingh district. The interim government in Bangladesh confirmed the arrests on Friday.
The arrested persons have been identified as Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tarek Hossain (19), Md. Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali (39), Nijum Uddin (20), Alomgir Hossain (38) and Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46). Officials said further investigation is underway to determine the roles of each accused.
Minority safety
The killing has renewed concerns about the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said such incidents undermine the idea of a civilised society and called for accountability. She stressed that violence in the name of religion cannot be justified under any circumstances.
