When the Florida Panthers entered this season, many expected them to become the first team in four decades to three-peat the Stanley Cup. With back-to-back championships and a roster full of all-stars, things looked smooth for the Panthers. But their form this season has left a lot to be desired. With captain and key defenseman Aleksander Barkov out of action, their defense has been incredibly vulnerable. To secure a playoff spot, changes are necessary. One insider believes that the answer to that might be in making a trade.

Justin Faulk from the St. Louis Blues is the target. The 33-year-old right-shot defenseman carries a $6.5 million cap hit this season and represents the kind of aggressive move that could push Florida over the top in its championship pursuit.According to Chris Johnston of The Athletic, the Panthers are eyeing the NHL's March trade deadline. Faulk has been increasingly competent this season. Johnston is proposing what he calls a home run swing deal that would bring a veteran defenseman to South Florida.Johnston makes the case that Florida needs to strengthen the right side of their defense. Jeff Petry is currently playing third-pair minutes behind Seth Jones and Aaron Ekblad, and the Panthers should be looking for an upgrade in that area.

Faulk would represent more than just a minor improvement. Johnston describes the potential acquisition as a home run swing rather than a simple roster tweak, noting that no team should be more motivated to go big than the Panthers, given their championship aspirations."Chasing Faulk would represent a home-run swing rather than a mere upgrade, and who could be more incentivized to go big than the Panthers?" Johnston wrote.

With more than 1,000 NHL games under his belt, Faulk would bring both veteran presence and reliability to the Panthers.Florida, meanwhile, offers him the first real chance to compete for the Stanley Cup. Johnston believes Florida general manager Bill Zito won't shy away from making the aggressive move required to land Faulk. Zito has a history of bold decisions and understands what it takes to build championship rosters."Florida GM Bill Zito has never shied away from an aggressive move, and he'll be trying to arm his team with the horses needed to win a third straight Stanley Cup," Johnston explained. Only the greatest teams in NHL history have won three consecutive championships. The challenge becomes exponentially harder with each title, as opponents adjust and roster construction becomes more difficult under the salary cap. Florida can't afford to be complacent. A trade for Faulk would send a clear message that the Panthers are all-in on making history and won't settle for anything less than another championship. Also Read: Brad Marchand celebrates 1,000th NHL game with Florida Panthers after unique teammate tribute ceremony night
