Dense fog disrupted flight and train services in Bhubaneswar on Friday, leading to two flight cancellations and multiple delays. Passengers faced significant travel plan disruptions, with some trains arriving hours behind schedule. Bus operators have urged drivers to exercise extreme caution. The IMD issued orange and yellow warnings for very dense and dense fog across several districts.
Bhubaneswar: At least 2 flights were cancelled at the city airport on Friday while 10 were delayed due to dense fog, which also affected train services.Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) director Prasanna Pradhan said a flight to Delhi and a Bhubaneswar-bound flight were cancelled.
“However, the city airport’s operations were normal.
The delays happened because of the cascading effect of flights reaching late from other airports due to fog,” he added.Babuli Swain, a relative of a flyer from Patia, said people book plane tickets to reach their destinations on time. “But flight delays are creating problems in their travel plans. My brother-in-law reached a family get-together late and had to apologise,” he added.Trains were also running late because of dense fog in Odisha and other states. Many north India-bound trains from Bhubaneswar and trains coming from there to Odisha were running late. Even local and intercity trains were running late due to fog.The Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express reached the national capital late by 7 hours and 48 minutes on Friday. Similarly, the Puri-ANVT (New Delhi) Nandankanan Superfast Express was running five hours late on Friday and the Puri-Rishikesh Utkal Express 7 hours.
The Puri-ANVT Purushottam Superfast Express reached New Delhi late by 3 hours 51 minutes.“My train, Kalinga Utkal Express (18478), reached Puri at 3:04 pm on Friday instead of 3:25 am. I could not go for darshan of Lord Jagannath in the morning. I sat for around 12 more hours on the train, which derailed my travel plans,” said Rohit Kumar, a passenger from Uttar Pradesh.Bus owners have asked their drivers to take extra precautions while driving in dense fog.
“Lives and property are more important than reaching on time,” said Debendra Sahu, general secretary of All Odisha Private Bus Owners’ Association.An IMD bulletin said 11 places, including Nayagarh, Dhenkanal and Boudh, witnessed dense fog, reducing visibility to below 50 metres. The city saw moderate fog, reducing visibility to 200 metres. An orange warning of very dense fog was issued for Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Nayagarh, Puri, Cuttack and Khurda districts for the next two days. Similarly, a yellow warning of dense fog was given for several districts, including Gajapati, Ganjam, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Balasore, Angul, Sundargarh, Rayagada, Koraput and Kandhamal.
