Ganga Dussehra 2025: Importance

Ganga Dussehra holds an immense religious and spiritual importance in Hinduism.

This day is regarded as a propitious occasion to pay tribute to Goddess Ganga. According to Hindu scriptures, it is believed that on the Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, Goddess Ganga descended to earth. Devotees across the country celebrate this festival with great zeal and joy. They offer prayers to Goddess Ganga and seek her blessings.Ganga Dussehra is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Maa Ganga and is also known as the Avataran day of Goddess Ganga.

Maa Ganga is known by various names, including Shubhra, Bhagirathi, Mandakini, Shivapriya, and Jahnavi. She is regarded as a living Goddess, who remains present on Earth in the form of river, cleansing the sins of devotees and purifying their soul, mind, and body.It is believed that those, who take a holy dip in Ganga water are relieved from all types of suffering and negativity. Maa Ganga blesses her devotees with purity, remove their past sins and cleanse their body, mind and soul.

Additionally, Maa Ganga assists individuals in attaining salvation after death.

Ganga Dussehra 2025: Story

According to Hindu Scriptures, sage Bhagirathi undertook rigorous penance to Lord Brahma, and requested to them to send Ganga to Earth to liberate his ancestors from a curse and grant them salvation. Lord Brahma instructed him to engage in penance to appease Lord Shiva, as only he had the power to manage the flow of Ganga; otherwise, it could lead to devastation.

Following this guidance, Bhagirathi complied and worshipped Lord Shiva.

Subsequently, Goddess Ganga emerged from the feet of Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva first placed Ganga on his head before allowing her to flow freely.

Ganga Dussehra 2025: Puja Rituals

1. People get up early at the time of Suryodaya or sunrise and take a holy dip in Ganga river.2. Offer Arghya to the rising sun and offer prayers.3. Chant Om Namah Shivaye while taking holy dip in Ganga river.4. One must take minimum 10 dips and if not then they should take at least 3 dips.5. Light a diya, offer flowers, sweets to Goddess Ganga.6. Some people even offer saree or dupatta to Goddess Ganga.7. People do charity and donation on this particular day.8. Offering food and clothes to Brahmin is considered highly rewarding.9. Devotees participate in Ganga Aarti in the evening.
