Milwaukee Bucks re-sign Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s brother, on a one-year deal, amid trade rumors linking Giannis to the Toronto Raptors.

On paper, the Milwaukee Bucks bringing back a 33-year-old forward who has career averages of 2.4 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 7.7 minutes per game might not look like major NBA news.
But when that player is Thanasis Antetokounmpo, the elder brother of two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, the decision takes on a much larger significance.
The Bucks announced Sunday that they had re-signed Thanasis, who spent five seasons in Milwaukee between 2019 and 2024 before missing last year while recovering from an Achilles tendon injury.
He is currently representing Greece at EuroBasket and will return to the NBA on a reported one-year, $2.9 million contract, according to ESPN.
Thanasis confirmed the news on social media, sharing his excitement about rejoining the team where he earned an NBA championship ring in 2021.
A Move with Deeper Meaning
Re-signing Thanasis goes beyond numbers. Around the league, his presence is viewed as a barometer for Giannis’ own happiness with the Bucks.
The elder Antetokounmpo has long been a steady voice in the locker room and one of Giannis’ closest confidants, and Milwaukee’s willingness to keep him on the roster is often read as a commitment to keeping their superstar comfortable.
The timing of this move is also fascinating. Speculation has been building that Giannis could be open to a trade this offseason, especially after Milwaukee’s disappointing 48–34 record last season and their third straight first-round playoff exit.
Adding to the unrest was the surprise decision to cut star guard Damian Lillard, which left everyone wondering if Giannis’ patience with the franchise might finally be wearing thin.
Raptors Rumors Swirl
Reports have linked the 30-year-old “Greek Freak" to potential trade interest from the Toronto Raptors. The Toronto Star claimed there is “mutual interest" should Antetokounmpo hit the market, while ESPN reported that the Raptors are actively searching for a “big fish" this offseason.
Giannis’ numbers remain at an MVP level. Last season, he averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists, continuing to dominate on both ends despite Milwaukee’s early playoff exit.
He is under contract through the 2026-27 season with a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28 and carries cap hits of $54.1 million in 2025-26 and $58.5 million in 2026-27.
