Tightening the noose around traffic violators, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday announced that they will no longer be offered discounts on challans, highlighting that they often delay clearing the penalties in the hope that the government will provide discounts.
The Chief Minister has also directed the police and transport departments to develop a system where the challan amount – in case of violation – will be directly deducted from the bank account of vehicle owners.
CM Reddy made the remarks while he was addressing the ‘Arrive Alive’ programme organised by Telangana police to curb the rate of road accidents in the state.
“Police generally focus on raising challans for offences like speeding, etc. However, some dispute these challans and even delay clearing the penalties in the hope that the govt will give a discount. Police must stop this practice of discounts," the CM said, as quoted by Times of India.
The Chief Minister has also instructed officials to coordinate with bankers to ensure transport department officials fetch the vehicle owner’s bank account details at the time of vehicle registration itself.
CM Revanth Reddy also recalled the traumatic experiences that his cabinet colleagues Komitireddy Venkat Reddy and Mohammed Azharuddin, or even popular film personalities Babu Mohan and Kota Srinivasa Rao, had to suffer through after losing their children to road accidents.
The Chief Minister underlined the need for creating awareness on road safety at different levels – from incorporating it into the curriculum of educational institutes to drafting a comprehensive law in the state regarding road safety.
Road safety remains a challenge for India, as the country continues to report the highest number of road accident fatalities globally.
