AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday (October 23, 2025) criticised the DMK government for having “turned the season of harvest into one of sorrow” in the Cauvery delta.
In a statement, he said it was the “sacred duty” of any government to protect the fruits of farmers. The government should not “hide behind excuses.” Despite his repeated caution to the government about the situation, nothing was done, as the harvest of countless farmers lay “waste.” Referring to his recent visit to Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, Mr. Palaniswami contended that “heaps of germinated paddy” were lying the DPCs. There was “no space” in godowns with “no urgency” in procurement.
He criticised the government for making “contradictory” statements with regard to the extent of damage to the crop. He demanded that the government immediately procure all the stock of paddy lying in the open, assess the crop damage, and compensate farmers who had suffered the loss.
