Six-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz has stated that although he cannot provide an exact number of tournaments a player should participate in to remain fit and compete at the highest level, the ATP Tour needs to address the calendar, which is becoming strenuous.

In recent months, multiple top-ranked tennis players have criticised the gruelling tournament calendar. Alcaraz has been among the most vocal, warning that he might skip certain mandatory events to protect his mental and physical health.

At a press conference during the Paris Masters, Alcaraz was asked how many matches he believes a top-ranked player should play in a season.

“Well, I don’t have an exact number of matches that we should play. I mean, I cannot answer with an exact number. However, they obviously need to do something with the calendar," Alcaraz said.

“The number of tournaments that we have to play, I think, is too high. We don’t have such, you know, a good period of time that we can practice, we can rest. Even during the season, I think it is week after week after week and we don’t have the chance to have a week just to prepare pretty well for the tournaments or what we have ahead in the season," Alcaraz added.

The ATP calendar spans 11 months, starting in late December and ending in November with the Tour Finals. This year, the season ends on Sunday, November 16 and the Australian Open starts on Sunday, January 18.

Ahead of that, the United Cup begins on January 2.

Alcaraz is coming off a win at the Japan Open on September 30 and played only at the Six Kings Slam since then. He is all set to compete at the Paris Masters, which will take place between October 27 and Sunday, November 2.

In Paris, Alcaraz has been handed a bye for his opening round match and might run into Cameron Norrie for his Round of 32 encounter.
