A Bangladeshi national was arrested on Monday for allegedly vandalising an idol at the historic Venu Gopalaswamy Temple in Devarabeesanahalli village, near Marathahalli on Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road.

What do we know about the incident?

The accused, identified as Kabir Mondal, reportedly hurled stones at the temple’s gopuram (tower) while shouting religious slogans before entering the sanctum sanctorum wearing shoes.

Police said Mondal attempted to damage the main idol of Lord Venu Gopalaswamy. The gatekeeper idol located at the temple’s entrance was found partially damaged.

Eyewitnesses said that upon witnessing the act, local residents rushed to stop him, overpowered him, and tied him to a tree before handing him over to the police.

What do we know about the accused?

Preliminary investigations revealed that Kabir Mondal, a Bangladeshi national, had entered India illegally and had been residing in the city for around five years.

He was reportedly living in Devarabeesanahalli and working odd jobs to earn a living. Police said they are verifying how he entered the country and managed to obtain accommodation and employment without proper documentation.

A senior officer said, “We are questioning him to find out if he acted alone or had any local support. His immigration status is also being examined."

Security stepped up around temple

In the aftermath of the incident, security has been tightened around the temple complex. One platoon of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and local police personnel have been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.

Authorities have appealed to the public to maintain calm while the investigation continues.

The police have registered a case of vandalism and illegal entry under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Foreigners Act.
