Nishanth Uirthanathan, a 35-year-old Second Officer from Tamil Nadu, fell seriously ill while onboard the vessel and died on June 11.

After the death of an Indian seafarer on a vessel off the coast of Oman, the Indian Embassy in Muscat on Sunday said that it is ready to recover his mortal remains the moment the ship docks at Duqm Port.

On Saturday, the embassy said that an Indian national, Nishanth Uirthanathan, 35, had passed away due to medical complications and that his mortal remains were onboard MT Celestial at Duqm Port.

In a post on X, India in Oman said: “The Embassy remains in active coordination with local Omani authorities, port officials and the shipping company regarding Mr. Nishanth Uirthanathan, who unfortunately died onboard MT Celestial due to medical conditions."

It further said: “The vessel is expected to berth soon at Duqm port. Necessary arrangements have been made for prompt recovery of the mortal remains from the vessel. The Mission is in touch with the family and facilitating all formalities for the earliest repatriation of the mortal remains to India."

It also assured that they are in contact with family members of Uirthanathan, crew members of the vessel and concerned authorities.

Earlier in the day, Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI), a body representing Indian seafarers globally, expressed concern over the continued presence of the deceased sailor’s body, who died on June 11, despite official assurances that efforts were underway to repatriate the mortal remains.

The union alleged that timely medical evacuation was delayed despite repeated distress calls, reportedly amid heightened regional tensions.
