Protests in PoK's Rawalakot enter seventh day as JAAC leads rallies against Pakistan military and administration, demanding greater rights after deadly clashes over refugee seats

Large-scale protests continued for a seventh consecutive day in Rawalakot in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), with thousands participating in sit-ins, rallies and long marches organised by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC).

The demonstrations, which have drawn participants from across the region, witnessed the raising of anti-establishment and rebellion slogans against Pakistan’s military and administration. Protesters converged on Rawalakot demanding greater regional rights and voicing opposition to what they described as increasing state control, sources told CNN-News18.

Addressing the gathering, JAAC leader Khawaja Mehran delivered a fiery speech, declaring, “We will give our lives" for the movement. He also launched a sharp attack on Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, stating, “Kashmir is not your property".

In a significant escalation of rhetoric, Mehran urged local residents to sever ties with Pakistani institutions, calling on Kashmiris employed in the military, police and government departments to resign from their positions.

“Our movement is for absolute freedom," Mehran said, formally rejecting what he described as the Pakistani system.

The ongoing agitation has also witnessed strong participation from women, with large numbers joining marches and sit-ins in support of the JAAC campaign. Visuals from Rawalakot showed women protesters marching alongside activists and community leaders as demonstrations expanded across the region.

The movement’s leadership has vowed to continue the protests despite rising tensions, insisting that the campaign will not be withdrawn until its demands are addressed.

The latest developments underscore growing unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, where protests over governance, political rights and economic issues have increasingly evolved into broader criticism of Pakistan’s administration and military establishment.

The latest unrest follows deadly clashes in Rawalakot on Sunday that left seven people dead. The violence erupted after the Supreme Court of Pakistan-administered Kashmir ruled that 12 legislative seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan were constitutionally protected and could not be abolished without a constitutional amendment.

The JAAC, formed in 2003, has demanded greater political rights for people in the region and has sought the abolition of the refugee seats.

With thousands still camped at protest sites and fresh groups arriving in Rawalakot, the demonstrations have emerged as one of the most significant public mobilisations witnessed in the region in recent years.
