Day after China issued travel warning against its citizens visiting Japan amid escalating tensions over Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s remarks on Taiwan, Japan on Monday emphasised that “channels of communication are open".
Tensions grew between the two countries after Takaichi told parliament on November 7 that a hypothetical Chinese attack on democratically-ruled Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo.
China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has always emphasised the use of force to take control of the island. Taiwan’s government rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims.
In response, Beijing summoned the Japanese ambassador for the first time in more than two years, and China’s defence ministry declared that any Japanese intervention would be doomed to fail, Reuters reported. China also sent its Coast Guard ship formation through the waters of Senkaku Islands, which is known as Diaoyu in China.
On Friday, China warned its citizens against travelling to Japan.
According to Reuters, Masaaki Kanai, the Japanese foreign ministry official in charge of Asia and Oceania affairs, arrived in the Chinese capital to meet his counterpart, Liu Jinsong.
“Various channels of communication are open," Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary told a regular press briefing. “We have made a firm request for the Chinese side to take appropriate steps," he said, adding that travel warnings were contradicting the efforts to promote strategic, mutually beneficial ties.
Meanwhile, the Chinese foreign ministry has said that Premier Li Qiang has no plans to meet Takaichi on the sidelines of G20 summit scheduled to be held this week in South Africa.
Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning pointed out that Japan must retract its “wrongful" remarks.
Amid China-Japan row, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has said that China was carrying out a “multifaceted attack" on Japan.
“I call on the international community to continue paying close attention and I also urge China to exercise restraint and demonstrate the conduct befitting a major power, rather than becoming a troublemaker for regional peace and stability," he added.
