The Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced that a joint inspection of the land acquired for expansion of Mysuru Airport is being conducted until December 17.
AAI described the exercise, which began on December 15, as the first step towards a formal handover of 206.12 acres of land by Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) to expand and upgrade Mysuru airport, apart from enabling it to operate wide-bodied aircraft, such as Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, significantly enhancing regional and international connectivity, according to a statement here.
The multi-agency survey and inspection is being conducted by officials from Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC), Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited (CNNL), Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and AAI.
They are verifying boundaries, assessing site conditions, identifying encumbrances if any, and finalising documentation.
Runway extension
As part of the airport’s expansion, the runway is expected to be extended from the present 1.7 km to 2.3 km.
The expansion project also envisages a dedicated cargo terminal to support agricultural and industrial exports, including Mysuru’s renowned Geographical Indication (GI) products.
The upgraded airport will enhance connectivity and position Mysuru as a premier gateway for domestic and international tourists, especially during the Dasara festival.
The airport expansion project is expected to catalyse investments, trade, and employment in the region, the statement explained, adding that the project will accelerate Mysuru’s emergence as a regional aviation hub, connecting the city to global destinations and strengthening its role in India’s economic growth story.
The AAI has extended its gratitude to the Government of Karnataka, KSIIDC, KIADB, CNNL, KPTCL, and NHAI for their proactive support. “This collaborative effort will transform Mysuru airport into a hub capable of handling wide-bodied aircraft, boosting tourism, trade and regional development,” the statement read.
