Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has declared Kakinada as the “Green Hydrogen Valley of India.”
Mr. Naidu was speaking after performing ‘bhumi puja’ for the construction of the ₹15,600-crore Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Production Complex, touted to be the world’s largest, being established by AM Green of the Greenko Group on a 495-acre campus in Kakinada on January 17, 2026 (Saturday).
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan accompanied Mr. Naidu to the project site, which had been acquired by AM Green from Nagarjuna Fertilizers.
First production target
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Mr. Naidu said, “The first production of 0.5 million MT of green ammonia is expected to be achieved by mid-2027 as part of AM Green’s annual production target of 1.5 Million MT.” He said the world’s largest green hydrogen and green ammonia project was proposed by AM Green’s founder and group Chairman Anil Chalamalasetty.
“Produced in Kakinada, green ammonia will be supplied mostly to Europe, and Germany is the major importer. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the move to export green ammonia to Germany. Kakinada will soon become the Green Hydrogen Valley of India,” said Mr. Naidu.
As per the Press Information Bureau report (January 12, 2026), Mr. Narendra Modi and Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Friedrich Merz welcomed the signing of one of the largest Offtake Agreement under India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) for the supply of green ammonia from AM Green to Uniper Global Commodities of Germany during the latter’s visit to India.
Mr. Naidu announced that AM Green would also invest ₹2,000 in the Kakinada complex to deploy two-GW of alkaline electrolyzers for the green hydrogen and green ammonia project.
“Green ammonia will be more useful for Andhra Pradesh, which is placed seventh in the highest nitrogen level in soil and sixth in the salinity level. The project will also contribute to decarbonisation targets. Kakinada city will be in news on the global platform once the project is commissioned and exports begin,” said Mr. Naidu, who pledged all assistance from the State government for the project as envisaged in the AP Integrated Clean Energy policy-2024.
On exploring the potential for renewable energies, Mr. Naidu said, “Andhra Pradesh is blessed with a nearly 1,000-km-long coastline. It also has the geographical advantage for production of wind and solar energy, thereby avoiding the need to spend on non-renewable power. Additionally, the State aims to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia on the East Coast.”
Power procurement cost
“Within three years, it is possible to decrease the per-unit cost of power procurement from ₹4.80 to an average of ₹1.19. Power transmission losses can be avoided if the potential of wind, solar and hydro power is tapped,” Mr. Naidu said.
The Chief Minister also announced that the first drone ambulance would be deployed this year. The first quantum computer would arrive in Amaravati in nine months, he added.
“Andhra Pradesh, which received 25% of the total investments in the country, has moved from Ease-of-Doing Business to ‘Speed-of-Doing Business. Those who believe in the knowledge economy will be the winners,” he saiid.
Mr. Naidu and Mr. Pawan Kalyan assured all support to Mr. Anil Chalamalasetty and AM Green Group president Mahesh Kolli in expediting the project.
