Karnataka’s oldest MLA and veteran Congress leader dies at 94

Karnataka’s oldest MLA and veteran Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa died from age-related complications at a private hospital in Bengaluru Sunday. He was 94 and represented the Davanagere South Assembly constituency.

National president of Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha, Shivashankarappa remained active in politics for around five decades and was elected six times as an MLA since 1994 and once to the Lok Sabha. Condolences messages poured in on social media cutting across party lines soon after the news of his death was out.

Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, expressing grief, recalled his long association with Shivashankarappa. “His simplicity and his long service to the people in public life will always be remembered. His departure is an irreparable loss to the state,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, in a post on X, said Shivashankarappa dedicated his life to social service and made special contributions to the field of education. “His departure has caused an irreplaceable loss to the state and the Congress Party,” he said.

Union Minister for Heavy Industry and Steel, H D Kumaraswamy, said he was saddened by the demise of the senior leader, former minister and industrialist. “He was a model personality and achiever who succeeded not only in politics, but in education, industry and social service sector,” Kumaraswamy said.

BJP Lok Sabha MP and former Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai recalled Shivashankarappa’s contributions in various sectors and hailed his leadership as the president of the Mahasabha. “His passing has caused an irreparable loss to the state and especially to Davanagere district, the Veerashaiva community, and personally to me.”

One of his sons S S Mallikarjun is a Minister in the state Cabinet. His daughter-in-law Prabha Mallikarjun represents Davangere in the Lok Sabha.
