Kite flying, cultural events mark Makar Sankranti in Buxar

Buxar: The Makar Sankranti was celebrated with festive fervour in Buxar on Wednesday. The district art and culture department organised a grand event at the historic Sipahi Ghat, featuring kite flying and cultural programmes as major attractions.The kite-flying competition stole the show when DDC Niharika Chhavi playfully cut the kite string of DM Sahila, drawing loud applause and cheers from the crowd. SDM Avinash Kumar also joined the contest, and his kite stayed aloft for a long time, adding to the excitement. Officials, staff members, and children participated enthusiastically, making the event lively and memorable. Children, in particular, were seen enjoying the festivities with great zeal.Apart from kite flying, the celebration included several activities such as flash mob dance, musical chairs, sack race, kabaddi, kho-kho, tug-of-war, and handball. These events added colour and energy to the celebrations along the Ganga banks.The programme was inaugurated by the DM with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. DDC Niharika Chhavi, SDM Avinash Kumar, ADM, and other senior officials were present. The event began with a welcome song by girl students, followed by impressive cultural performances by students from various educational institutions, which received warm appreciation from the audience.

A handicraft stall showcasing bamboo products made by inmates of the Central Jail attracted visitors, while food stalls set up by Jeevika women’s self-help groups witnessed heavy footfall.Addressing the gathering, the DM said Makar Sankranti holds special significance in cultural and social life, symbolising harmony, unity, and collective celebration. She praised the talent and hard work of the district’s youth.DDC Niharika Chhavi said celebrating Makar Sankranti on the banks of the Ganga has a unique charm. She welcomed citizens and noted that colourful kites had been filling the sky with joy and enthusiasm since morning.
