The ongoing food festival and trade fair, organised by the Kudumbashree District Mission near Lions Park at Kozhikode South Beach, is celebrating the rich culinary heritage of Malabar. The seaside venue welcomes visitors with stalls selling traditional dishes, snacks, combo meals, cakes, desserts, and a wide array of ethnic delicacies prepared by various Kudumbashree units across the district.
“Kudumbashree offers a vital marketing platform for grassroots entrepreneurs like us who lack access to mainstream retail spaces,” said Thesleena, a home baker who is retailing at the event.
Aimed at empowering small-scale sellers financially, the festival promotes micro-enterprise products through its dedicated stalls. A particular highlight of the fest is the range of cakes and desserts prepared by the Kudumbashree Cafe training group.
In addition to food stalls, trade hubs have been set up at the fest for selling organic and natural products such as forest honey, red sanders, ginger coffee, true indigo, and palm candy.
“The unique flavours have drawn visitors not only from across the district but from neighbouring districts as well. Despite the slow start, we are hoping to host more customers in the coming days,” said Neethu A., district programme manager, Kudumbashree.
By focussing on microfinance and livelihood development, the Kudumbashree Mission aims to stimulate the local economic growth of women entrepreneurs. It provides small-scale units with a marketing space to showcase their skills, helping them secure financial independence and achieve a sustainable livelihood.
”Kudumbashree offers products with no added preservatives, ensuring purity and natural quality,” said Kavitha P.C., district mission coordinator.
The festival is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. until Sunday (December 21).
