Kylian Mbappé delivered another stellar performance as Real Madrid battled to a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad in La Liga on Saturday, despite playing for more than an hour with 10 men following Dean Huijsen’s red card.
Mbappé opened the scoring early and later set up Arda Güler for Madrid’s second, before Mikel Oyarzabal pulled one back from the penalty spot for the hosts.
The result keeps Madrid perfect with 12 points from four matches, three ahead of second-placed Athletic Bilbao, who suffered their first defeat of the season against Alavés.
Huijsen’s Red Card Sparks Debate
Madrid took the lead after just 12 minutes, when Mbappé latched onto a poor back-pass, burst past two defenders, and finished clinically for his fourth league goal of the season.
The game shifted on 29 minutes when Huijsen, signed this summer from Bournemouth, was sent off for hauling down Oyarzabal as he charged toward goal.
Real Sociedad coach Xabi Alonso strongly disagreed with the decision:
“For me it was a yellow card. (Éder) Militão was close and the ball was not under control, and seeing the replay didn’t change my mind. I asked about it, the referee explained it and it didn’t convince me."
Despite being down to 10 men, Madrid struck again before halftime. Mbappé carved through Sociedad’s defense with a trademark run from the left, before squaring for Güler, who calmly slotted home.
Sociedad improved after the break and earned a penalty when Dani Carvajal handled inside the box. Oyarzabal converted confidently, but despite heavy pressure, the hosts couldn’t find an equalizer.
Madrid’s win makes them the sole leaders of La Liga, after Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic Club slipped at home. An own goal by Alejandro Berenguer, who deflected in a Denis Suárez cross, gave Alavés a surprise 1-0 victory in the Basque derby.
Atlético Madrid Finally Click
Elsewhere, Atlético Madrid secured their first win of the season, beating Villarreal 2-0 at the Metropolitano. Pablo Barrios opened the scoring before summer signing Nico González sealed the win with a goal on his debut.
The result eased pressure on Diego Simeone’s men after two defeats and a draw in their opening fixtures.
Atlético’s European campaign begins midweek with a tough trip to Anfield.
