A 33-year-old woman was shot dead in broad daylight on a busy street in Gwalior on Friday, allegedly by a man she had accused of harassment just three days earlier.

The accused, identified as 33-year-old contractor Arvind Parihar, remained by the body of Nandini after the shooting, forcing police to fire teargas shells to overpower and arrest him.

According to eyewitnesses, Parihar intercepted Nandini near a crowded stretch and opened fire at close range, reported The Indian Express.

Advocate MP Singh, who was nearby, said, “I heard three shots being fired at the woman. She collapsed on the road while people stood helpless."

Police said the victim sustained multiple bullet wounds and died during treatment at hospital.

CSP Nagendra Sikarwar said that when officers reached the spot, Parihar brandished his weapon at them. “The accused even tried to threaten the police team, but he was subdued with teargas and taken into custody. His firearm has been seized," he said.

Investigators revealed that Nandini and Parihar had been in a relationship despite both being married with children.

In 2023, the two allegedly solemnised a marriage at an Arya Samaj Mandir without divorcing their spouses. However, their relationship soured, leading to repeated disputes and at least three complaints by Nandini against Parihar.

On September 9, she had approached the SP’s office alleging that Parihar had misled her into marriage and continued to harass her.

Earlier, in 2024, she accused him of trying to run her over, though she later withdrew her testimony, enabling him to secure bail.

Police also disclosed that Nandini had a criminal history, having been arrested in a 2017 murder case and serving over four years in jail before her release in 2022.

Preliminary interrogation suggests property disputes and mounting personal tensions may have triggered the latest attack. Police are investigating further.
