Mumbai Police have launched an investigation after CCTV footage from a garment shop in the Fort area showed a group of individuals allegedly shoplifting amid the ongoing Maratha quota agitation in the city.

The suspects, dressed in attire resembling that of protesters, were seen taking items from the store before leaving.

Sources said that the authorities are working to identify the culprits and determine whether they were genuine demonstrators or miscreants attempting to exploit the protest.

The development comes amid heightened tensions across Maharashtra, where the Maratha quota stir has entered a crucial phase.

The movement, led by activist Manoj Jarange-Patil, has seen massive rallies and sit-ins demanding reservations for the Maratha community in education and government jobs.

Jarange has repeatedly insisted that the agitation remain peaceful, urging supporters to avoid violence or disruptions.

Over the past few weeks, demonstrations have intensified, particularly in Marathwada and western Maharashtra, with protesters pressing the state government for a permanent and legally sustainable solution.

The agitation has disrupted normal life in several districts, with incidents of road blockades, rallies, and partial shutdowns being reported.

The Mumbai Traffic Police on Monday said that traffic disruptions continue around Azad Maidan and CSMT Junction due to the ongoing Maratha quota agitation.

The protest has slowed vehicular movement in the area, spilling over to nearby junctions as well.

Officials added that traffic congestion has also been reported from Fort, Marine Lines, and Crawford Market, urging commuters to use alternate routes to reach their destinations.

The state government has been holding talks with Jarange and other community leaders, but the issue remains unresolved, keeping tensions simmering.

The shoplifting incident in Fort has added a new layer to the challenges faced by law enforcement in balancing the right to protest with the need to maintain order.
