US President Donald Trump issued a threat to Cuba on Sunday, demanding that it “make a deal" with the United States or face serious consequences. He also approved of the idea of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio becoming the next President of the communist-ruled country.

As tensions rise between the United States and Latin American countries, Trump shared a post on his Truth Social platform claiming that Marco Rubio would become the next President of Cuba and said, “Sounds good to me".

This was not a confirmation of US policy, and the X user may have suggested Rubio’s name because he was born to Cuban immigrant parents. Users have posted AI-generated photos of Rubio that depict him in a range of imagined roles, from the Shah of Iran and the president of Venezuela to the manager of Manchester United.

Shortly after Trump’s post, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez insisted “right and justice are on Cuba’s side." The United States “behaves like an out-of-control criminal hegemon that threatens peace and security, not only in Cuba and this hemisphere, but throughout the entire world," Rodriguez posted on X.

Trump’s Warning To Cuba

This came amid a period of tensions between the Trump administration and Latin American countries. In a message on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Cuba had long relied on large amounts of Venezuelan oil, but that would no longer continue.

“Venezuela doesn’t need protection anymore from the thugs and extortionists who held them hostage for so many years. Venezuela now has the United States of America, the most powerful military in the World (by far!), to protect them, and protect them we will. THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY GOING TO CUBA – ZERO! I strongly suggest they make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE," Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

His remarks come a week after US forces captured Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in a nighttime operation in Caracas that killed dozens of Venezuelan and Cuban security personnel.

The Cuban government said 32 of its citizens assigned to protect Maduro were killed during the US raid, while 23 Venezuelan troops also died. Cuba’s communist government has yet to directly respond to the US president’s provocative suggestion that an American citizen could rule the island.
