Kolkata Knight Riders made a statement at the IPL Auctions on Tuesday, splurging heavily to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season. The franchise first secured Australian all-rounder Cameron Green for a staggering Rs 25.20 crore, surpassing Mitchell Starc’s previous record of Rs 24.75 crore to become the most expensive overseas player ever at an IPL auction. The battle for Green saw KKR and Chennai Super Kings locked in an intense bidding war, with CSK ultimately missing out as KKR emerged victorious. Shortly after, KKR went on to make another high-profile signing, landing Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana for Rs 18 crore. Pathirana’s deal makes him the most expensive Sri Lankan player in IPL history, marking a major coup for the franchise. The move came after KKR had already secured Green, showcasing the team’s intent to invest in top-quality overseas talent. Pathirana had previously been released by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 13 crore, and his high price tag this time reflects both his IPL potential and the growing competition for elite pacers.

, engaging in early talks, but eventually pulled out as Royal Challengers Bengaluru successfully acquired him for Rs 7 crore. The franchise entered the auction with the largest purse among all teams at Rs 64.30 crore, giving them a significant advantage in pursuing top players. Pathirana has proven his worth in previous IPL campaigns, having played 12 games in IPL 2025 and taking 13 wickets at an economy of 10.14.
Overall, he has featured in 32 IPL matches, claiming 47 wickets at an economy rate of 8.68. Known for his pace, bounce, and ability to bowl in high-pressure situations, Pathirana is expected to add significant firepower to KKR’s bowling attack. Meanwhile, Cameron Green’s contract follows auction rules for foreign players, with Rs 18 crore (USD 1.9 million) going to him directly and the remaining amount allocated to the BCCI’s player development programme. With two marquee overseas signings already secured, KKR has set the tone for the season. The early moves at the auction highlight the franchise’s aggressive approach and ambition to build a balanced and powerful squad capable of competing at the highest level.
