Soon after the missing wife of Raja Raghuvanshi, who was allegedly killed while on honeymoon in Meghalaya, surrendered before the police, her parents have sought a CBI inquiry into the case, claiming that the police are “giving false statements” against their innocent daughter.

Three assailants from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested in connection with the case so far. Sonam had allegedly hired men to murder her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, according to Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang

Sonam’s father Devi Singh, speaking to news agency PTI, demanded a CBI inquiry, alleging that the police are “getting distracted by the locals and giving false statement”.

“I demand a CBI inquiry, I request Amit Shah to get a proper inquiry. What kind of proof do they have? Why would she kill her husband? The police haven’t met Sonam but she has been declared a culprit. Sonam is innocent. They are making false claims,” Singh said.

Sangeeta, Sonam’s mother Sangeeta, said: “These are all false allegations (against my daughter). Investigation should be done.”

The arrests on Monday came 18 days after the couple, who got married last month, went missing while on their honeymoon in Meghalaya, and a week after the husband’s body was found from a gorge below Wei Sawdong Falls along with a murder weapon.

Festive offer

The body was found after their family members reached Meghalaya in search of them. A massive operation was launched involving the police, SDRF, NDRF, SOT and drones.

Meanwhile, Raja’s mother Uma Raghuvanshi said Sonam should be punished if she is found guilty of murdering her son.

“Those responsible should get the death penalty. If Sonam did this, then she too should be punished. Sonam always behaved well with us – we still can’t believe she could have done this… We had no clue anything was wrong, even during phone calls. If Sonam really got Raja killed, I want the harshest punishment – the death sentence. But if she didn’t do it, then I won’t falsely blame her. I treated her like my own daughter; her behaviour was always good,” Uma told PTI.

Raja’s brother said: “Only when Sonam speaks will we get to know the truth and lie… If Sonam is involved in this crime, then we accept whatever punishment the Madhya Pradesh government decides.”

While Sonam had been missing until she surrendered Monday morning, police had slowly been picking up on a trail of clues, including CCTV footage from the various areas the couple stopped.
