An unverified video is making rounds on social media in which England cricketer Ben Duckett is seen drinking alcohol. The incident had taken place in Noosa, where the English players were taking a break between the 2nd Test in Brisbane and the third one in Adelaide.
Amidst the video going viral, the England Cricket Board released a statement saying: “We are aware of content circulating on social media. We have high expectations for behaviour, accepting that players are often under intense levels of scrutiny, with established processes that we follow when conduct falls below expectations. We also support players who need assistance. We will not comment further at this stage while we establish the facts.”
Former English cricketer Michael Vaughan, reacting to the video in his column for The Telegraph, wrote: “I am not going to criticize England for what they got up to in Noosa. I criticise what they do on the cricket field, the way they play and the way they prepare to play cricket. I am not going to point the finger at a group of young people who have had a few beers on a couple of days off. I did exactly the same as them when I played for England, although I did at least know when it was time to go home and that is probably what Ben Duckett needs to learn.”
“Duckett should not be reprimanded at all on the evidence we have seen, and neither should the other players, because it is a wider issue: the game of cricket has created this drinking culture. England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa all have the same culture. You give a group of young people three or four days off to relax, and they’re going to do something like this,” he added.
England are 3-0 down after the first three Tests, and opener Duckett has been going through a lean patch at the top of the order. His highest score has been 28.
