Punjab Police on Saturday claimed that Amritpal Singh alias Amrit Dalam, a most-wanted gangster, has been detained in Moldova in eastern Europe in coordination with central agencies.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said Amritpal, who is linked to the ‘Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang’, is wanted in multiple criminal cases in the State.
Mr. Yadav said Amritpal was detained at the Moldova border on the basis of an Interpol Red Notice, issued at the request of Punjab Police in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Interpol and other central agencies.
“Amritpal Singh is wanted in multiple serious criminal cases, including drug smuggling, murders, attempted murders, etc., and has been absconding abroad for a considerable period. His detention follows sustained international coordination and persistent follow-up by Punjab Police agencies,” he said.
“Legal and diplomatic procedures are now under way to secure his extradition-deportation to India so that he can face the law,” he added.
Amritpal, a native of Dalam Nangal village in Batala, had escaped abroad using a fraudulent passport. He has been actively making extortion calls targeting individuals and business owners, particularly in Amritsar region.
Pointing out that the Overseas Fugitive Tracking Cell of Punjab Police is currently pursuing 61 fugitive gangsters hiding abroad, Mr. Yadav said Amritpal’s detention marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to track and bring back offenders evading justice overseas.
