The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai issued an advisory on Friday, saying that flight operations have been affected due to a technical issue impacting the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) at Delhi, and warned of flight delays.
This came after more than 300 flights were delayed at the Delhi airport due to a technical problem with the air traffic control messaging system, according to the Airports Authority of India. This AMSS failure at the Delhi Airport has started impacting Mumbai, Jaipur, Lucknow, Varanasi, and other major international airports, as originating flights from Delhi to these airports are delayed. Hence, the onward journey is affected.
“Flight Operations at Mumbai Airport have been affected by a technical issue impacting the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) at Delhi, which supports Air Traffic Control flight planning. The concerned authorities are actively working to resolve the issue at the earliest," said the Mumbai Airport in its advisory.
“As a result, airline operations may experience delays. Passengers are advised to connect with their respective airlines for updates on flight status and revised schedules. We regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience and cooperation."
Chaos At Delhi Airport
The IGI Airport in Delhi, one of the country’s busiest airports, plunged into chaos on Friday as more than 300 domestic as well as international flights were delayed due to technical problems with the air traffic control system. IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, SpiceJet and Akasa Air said there are delays in their flights at the Delhi airport due to the technical issues.
“Flight operations at Delhi Airport are experiencing delays due to a technical issue in the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), which supports Air Traffic Control data. Controllers are processing flight plans manually, leading to some delays. Technical teams are working to restore the system at the earliest," said the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in a statement.
DIAL (Delhi International Airport Ltd) also said flight operations have been disrupted due to an ongoing technical issue with the AMSS that supports air traffic control flight planning process. The malfunction also hit several international airlines, with an ITA Airways flight to Rome delayed by nearly two hours and a Virgin Atlantic flight to London by more than an hour, according to Reuters.
Sources familiar with the matter told CNN-News18 that the disruption could potentially be the result of a malware-induced overload in automation software. They said the software was trying to handle conflict and possible malware intrusion attempts. “This is also targeting system interfaces or radar synchronisation modules," sources added.
