Mumbai: Manhole In Your Locality? Here’s How To Report Them

A BMC sanitation worker fell into an uncovered manhole just when the Mayor was out to inspect the ground situation. If manholes trouble your locality here's how you can report them

A man in Mumbai fell into a manhole right in front of Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Wednesday. This incident happened when the Mayor had gone out into the city to inspect the on-ground situation with a view on the approaching monsoon season.

Soon after the incident, the video of it went viral on social media. Videos circulating on the microblogging site ‘X’ show a policeman rushing to hold and support a man, who is a sanitation worker with the Birhanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), who had fallen into an open manhole.

The fact that the mouth of the manhole was uncovered could not be seen by anyone since that side of the road was water-logged.

The Mayor was visibly angered by the turn of events and gave stern direction to officials of the municipal corporation to ensure that all manholes in the city are covered soon. She even reportedly warned the official in-charge of the ward where this incident happened that he could be suspended, if any manhole is found uncovered.

Here Is How You Can Report Any Uncovered Manholes In Your Locality

There are several ways to of reporting an uncovered manhole, if you’re a resident of Mumbai. The easiest way to do it would be by calling the BMC on its toll-free number 1916.

You would have tell the call operator the location of the place where you have spotted the open manhole. To do that you must give the exact street address, the nearby landmark, and you should also inform them whether the manhole is open, or it is overflowing.

Alternatively, you could also go to the complaint registering website of the BMC. There, you can register a civic complaint.

There are more digitally savvy ways of getting your complaint registered.

You could register a complaint on the MyBMC app and do remember to drop the exact location of where the open manhole is to properly raise the matter.

Another, and flashier, way of getting an open manhole noticed by the BMC could be to simply tag its official account (@mybmc) on X.

Lastly, if you are facing some monsoon related immediate concern or emergency, give a call to BMC’s Disaster Management Cell at 22694725, 22704403, or 61234000.

A 2023 report from Indian Express also mentions that in June that year, the municipal corporation had come out with a helpline number – 7718001430 –  for residents of the city to make complaints in this regard. The report also mentioned that scrape dealers in the city were issued guidelines to not buy manhole covers.
