Guwahati: On Teachers’ Day, nine educators from the northeast were presented the National Teachers’ Award, including Debajit Ghosh of Namsang TE Model School in the Namsan Tea Estate on the Assam-Arunachal border.
He emerged as a beacon of hope, transforming the lives of his students.He highlighted the urgent need for physical instructors in model schools, noting the enthusiasm of students eager to participate in sports and physical activities. He brought hope by organising an innovative science exhibition in collaboration with Vikram Sarabhai Space Exhibition, Space Applications Centre, and Isro in June 2023, he sparked curiosity among students, proving that the love for learning can thrive even in the most challenging environments.His vision for student well-being extended to health, where a camp he requested revealed widespread under-nutrition. Acting decisively, he introduced green leafy vegetables and supplements into the PM-POSHAN programme, which successfully improved the haemoglobin levels of 165 children.The results were remarkable. Under his guidance, HSLC results improved from 78% to 90%, and his students are now stepping confidently into sports and cultural competitions.
His focus on academic excellence, physical fitness, and emotional well-being transformed the school into a nurturing space for holistic growth.Receiving the national honour in New Delhi, Ghosh said, “From a school in Namsang Tea Estate on the Assam–Arunachal border to this national platform — it is truly a privilege,” he said.This year on Teachers’ Day, a total of 66 teachers across the country—45 school teachers and 21 from higher education—were awarded the National Teachers Award 2025 for their exemplary contributions to the field of education. Apart from Ghosh, Nang Ekthani Mounglang of Govt Secondary School Pachin in Papum Pare in Arunachal Pradesh, Peleno Petenilhu of John Govt Higher Secondary School Viswema in Kohima in Nagaland, Koijam Machasana of Ghari Upper Primary School in Imphal West in Manipur, Karma Tempo Ethenpa of PM Shri Mangan SSS in Mangan in Sikkim, Heipor Uni Bang of KB Memorial Secondary School Wapung in East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, Bidisha Majumder of Hariananda English Medium HS School in Gomati in Tripura, Proshanto Kumar Saha of Rajiv Gandhi University in Papum Pare in Arunachal Pradesh, and Zoramdinthara of Mizoram University in Mizoram also received the awards.
