The new bypass being developed along the banks of the Koraiyar and the Kudamuritti rivers and the Uyyakondan canal to link the Integrated Bus Terminus at Panjapur with three major highways around the city would be completed within 18 months, Collector Pratik Tayal has said.

The 10.11-km-long road is developed by Tiruchi Corporation at an estimate of ₹483.72 crore. The project is being executed in three packages — between Panjapur and Karumandapam (two km) at cost of ₹81.72 crore; Woraiyur and Kudamurutti bridge (2.2) km at a cost of ₹68 crore, and between Karumandapam and Woraiyur (5.85 km) at an estimated cost of ₹334 crore.

Although the first two stages of the project are under progress, the third stage is yet to be taken up.

The third stage is the longest among the three stretches. Although the Corporation initially planned to acquire about 20 acres, the area was reduced to about 1.80 acres following objections from property owners.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tayal, who inspected the first stage of the project recently along with senior officials, said the bypass would connect the Tiruchi-Madurai; Tiruchi-Dindigul, and Tiruchi-Karur national highways from the integrated bus terminus. Apart from providing an easy access to the integrated bus stand, it would help ease traffic congestion within the city by providing an alternative route.

“Once completed, it would reduce the travel time between the Tiruchi-Madurai and Tiruchi-Karur national highways to just 20 minutes. The project will be completed within 18 months and brought to public use,” an official release said.
