You removed all the added sugars from your diet, hit the gym every single day, ate a balanced diet, and yet the jawline seems to be non-existent? A doctor reveals that not diet or exercise, could be the reason for a less defined jawline. This habit affects tongue posture and jaw development, leading to a receding jaw. Simple steps like addressing nasal congestion, improving posture, and tongue exercises can help correct this issue.
You removed all the added sugars from your diet, hit the gym every single day, ate a balanced diet, and yet the jawline seems to be non-existent? There is nothing wrong with your diet or fitness regime.
It’s time to look deeper. According to Dr Tania Elliott, a dual-board-certified internal medicine and allergy/immunology physician trained at Mount Sinai Hospital, the culprit could be a bedtime habit, which she explained in a video shared on Instagram. So what’s coming between you and your precious jawline? Let’s take a look. The real culprit behind your jawline’s disappearance Having a well-defined jawline is every person’s dream. Some people may have an undefined jawline since childhood.
The reason behind this is a sleep habit. Do you breathe through your mouth? Well, that’s exactly where it goes wrong. “Mouth breathing is making your jawline disappear,” Dr Elliott said. “This is a tough one, but I have some great stuff for you. The lack of normal tongue posture, strength, and balance alters the natural forward growth of your jaw, causing the jawline to recede and be less prominent, and is often called mouth breather’s face,” the doctor explained.
A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis published in BMC Oral Health found that mouth breathing can cause underdevelopment of the jaw in children. 5 simple steps to correct the jawline disappearance Dr Elliott recommended a few tips that may help adults correct the issue. These include: Address your nasal passages: Dr Elliott explained that if your nose is clogged, you would breathe through your mouth. “I use a combination of Flonase and Afrin to reduce inflammation in the nose and open up nasal passages,” she said. Consider mouth tape: “If your nasal passages are clear and you’re still breathing through your mouth, you can try mouth tape,” she said. Improve posture: Another way to bring more definition to your jawline is to work on your posture. “Work on your overall body posture, including doing chin tucks and keeping your back straight,” she said. Adjust how you sleep: “If you’re noticing mouth breathing when you’re lying on your back, lie on your left side instead and put a pillow between your legs,” she said. Tongue push-ups: “Press your entire tongue against the roof of your mouth and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat five times. This improves the tone in your tongue and the soft palate,” she said. There are many factors linked to a weak jawline, such as genetics, ageing, overbite, and eating soft foods. A 2019 study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that chewing hard foods puts mechanical load on the jawbone, which increases bone remodeling. In children, thumb-sucking may also lead to a weak jawline, according to the American Dental Association.
While these tips may help certain adults, it is important to consult a doctor.Note: The information provided in this article is for educational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice.
