Old Trafford could soon be welcoming back another familiar face.
According to multiple reports, former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has emerged as the frontrunner to become caretaker head coach, with the club desperate for stability following the sacking of Ruben Amorim earlier this month.
As per Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, United are believed to have interviewed both Carrick and Solskjaer, as uncertainty swirls around the temporary reign of Darren Fletcher.
Club chiefs are eager to have an appointment in place before players return to training on Wednesday, with an announcement expected within the next 48 hours.
A Solskjaer comeback would be emotional — and controversial. The Norwegian first took over as interim boss in 2018 after José Mourinho’s dismissal, later earning the job permanently before being sacked himself in 2021.
Carrick then stepped in briefly, overseeing three unbeaten games before making way for Ralf Rangnick.

Now 44, Carrick is said to be in advanced talks with United. He has been out of work since leaving Middlesbrough last June, having guided them to the Championship play-offs in 2022–23 before narrowly missing out in successive seasons.
Despite having less managerial experience than Solskjaer, Carrick’s deep understanding of the club counts in his favour. He made 464 appearances for United, won multiple trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson, and later served as a first-team coach under both Mourinho and Solskjaer.
Fletcher’s stint appears to be coming to an end after a draw at Burnley and an FA Cup exit to Brighton, leaving United scrambling for calm ahead of Saturday’s derby clash with Manchester City.
