In a significant crackdown on alleged illegal foreign nationals, Jagatsinghpur Police on Thursday detained two suspected Bangladeshi citizens during a raid at Beheram Basti under the Sadar Police limits. The operation, carried out following intelligence inputs about the presence of a large group of undocumented individuals in the area, also led to the recovery of a firearm from the possession of the detained duo, officials said.
According to preliminary information shared by police sources, more than 30 suspected Bangladeshi nationals had been residing in a rented house in the densely populated Beheram Basti locality. The rented premises, officials believe, may have been serving as a temporary shelter for the group. Acting on the inputs, a police team reached the spot early in the morning to verify identity documents and question the occupants.
However, the operation quickly took a volatile turn. During the raid, several of the suspects allegedly engaged in a scuffle with the police personnel, attempting to obstruct the search and disrupt the ongoing verification process. The situation prompted authorities to call for reinforcements, following which more than two platoons of police force were deployed to secure the area and prevent escalation.
Despite the heightened security measures and strong police cordon, more than ten individuals managed to flee the spot amid the commotion. Their sudden escape has raised concerns about the possibility of a larger network operating within or beyond the district.
Jagatsinghpur Police have since launched a massive manhunt to trace the absconding suspects. Officers are reportedly combing nearby localities, verifying tenant records, and coordinating with intelligence units to track potential escape routes. The identities and documentation of those detained are also being thoroughly examined to verify nationality, travel history, and any possible criminal links.
Speaking to reporters, senior officials stated that the investigation will look into the purpose of the group’s stay, potential cross-border connections, and whether the recovered firearm was linked to any planned illegal activity. “We are verifying every detail. Further action will be taken based on what the investigation reveals," a police officer said.
