Odisha cyclone warning: Govt prepares after relief and supplies as IMD issues orange alert

Odisha Cyclone Alert: The Odisha government has placed all districts and key departments on high alert as a cyclonic storm is expected to develop over the Bay of Bengal by Monday. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the day. State minister Suresh Pujari said in Bhubaneswar that adequate relief supplies have been mobilised and all district collectors have been instructed to remain vigilant, reported All India Radio.

According to the India Meteorological Department, a low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to move in a west-northwest direction and intensify into a depression over the southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal by the end of Saturday, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). It is likely to strengthen further into a deep depression on Sunday and take the shape of a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by Monday.

Rain forecast and yellow alert in Odisha

The IMD has also warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several Odisha districts for at least three days beginning Monday. A yellow alert has been issued in 17 districts. The latest bulletin from the IMD for Saturday reads: “Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty
surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nawarangpur”

On Sunday, light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is forecast over Coastal Odisha,
Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nawarangpur. Rest of Odisha is likely to remain dry. The yellow warning shall continue in the districts of

An orange alert will be in place the three districts: Ganjam, Gajapati, and Rayagada. The IMD said heavy to very heavy rain / thunderstorm with lightning and winds reaching up to 40 kmph is likely in these districts.

At the same time, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Nuapada, Boudh, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Cuttack are likely to receive heavy rain and will be under a yellow alert.

Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sonepur will be under a yellow alert as well for thunderstorm and lightning.

On Tuesday, October 28, the orange alert is likely to be extended to Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur,
Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Koraput, and Malkangiri along with Ganjam, Gajapati, and Rayagada.
