Odisha horror: Man attacks estranged wife with knife, slits her throat in public after argument

BALASORE: In an act of violence, a man allegedly attacked his estranged wife with a knife in full public view on Thursday, leaving her critically injured. The incident occurred around 4:30 PM in the Pathan Mohalla under Balasore Town police limits and has since sparked widespread outrage across the region.

The accused, identified as Sheikh Amjad, a resident of Buxi Bazaar in Cuttack, had reportedly come to meet his wife, who had been living separately due to ongoing marital disputes.

Eyewitnesses stated that the couple was engaged in a roadside conversation, which quickly escalated into a heated argument. In a sudden and brutal turn, Amjad allegedly pulled a sharp knife from his pant pocket and slit the woman’s throat in broad daylight. Local residents and family members rushed to the victim’s aid, immediately transporting her to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack, where she remains in critical condition. Bystanders managed to overpower Amjad at the scene and handed him over to the Balasore Town Police. Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman had been residing in rented accommodation in the locality and had strained ties with the accused. Police have detained Amjad and initiated legal proceedings. Authorities are currently interrogating him to ascertain the full sequence of events and motive behind the attack. A video of the incident, reportedly captured by a bystander, has gone viral on social media, intensifying public calls for swift justice and stronger measures against domestic violence.
