Online harassment: FIR on Sourav plaint

Dwaipayan.GhoshKolkata: Four days after receiving a complaint from former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly alleging online harassment and defamation, Kolkata Police registered an FIR after finding prima facie evidence supporting his allegations.The case was registered at Thakurpukur PS on Friday and is being investigated jointly with the southwest cyber cell following directions from an Alipore court. Police sources said the primary probe led investigators to identify the main accused, who has now been named in the FIR.The FIR was lodged under BNS Section 356(2). Police said action followed an order passed by the ACJM court on Thursday after an initial delay in registering the case.

Officers denied any lapse, claiming they had waited for preliminary verification. “The case was registered following due legal procedure after a GD was lodged on June 15,” an officer said.The complaint alleged that derogatory and defamatory posts circulated on social media were aimed at damaging Ganguly’s public image. Ganguly named an unofficial Facebook page carrying his name and a digital sports platform, seeking removal of the content and immediate action against those responsible.
