Organ donation saves five lives in Kerala

Divakar S. Rajesh, 53, who died at a private hospital here following cerebral haemorrhage, will now live through five others, who received organs from him.

Divakar, a tax consultant and a resident of Jawahar Nagar, Kowdiar, was admitted to a private hospital in the city on December 14 after he fainted. Following the confirmation of brainstem death on December 17, the family came forward to donate his organs.

The organ donation processes were arranged and coordinated by Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation (K-SOTTO). One kidney and liver was received by a private hospital in the city and the other kidney was received by a private hospital at Kozhikode. Both corneas were transplanted in patients undergoing treatment at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology.

Mr. Divakar is survived by his wife Aswathy Bose, an advocate and a daughter, a Plus Two student. The funeral rites will take place on Friday.

Health Minister Veena George conveyed her condolences and thanked the family for coming forward to donate organs which have given a new lease of life to five others.
